  • About Janine

  • Janine (or J as we like to call her) began her diverse working career at 16 years old as a media assistant for McCann Erickson Media advertising agency. Like a lot of young Aussies, she had a strong desire for travel and adventure which enticed her to the USA as a camp leader with the ‘Camp America’ program, dealing with handicapped children from the San Francisco girl scouts.

From there J continued her travels to Europe where she landed a job as the lead stewardess on David Bowie’s yacht (party boat). “Really I was just a glorified waitress on a big boat cruising around exotic locations with famous people like Robin Williams, Mick Jagger and Princess Margaret.” Was it just sex, drugs and rock n’ roll, we ask? “no, but I did have a peak at David Bowie when he was sunbathing naked”.

After returning home, J worked in Village Cinemas where she ran the busiest and most profitable movie theatre in Australia. After proving her keen business skills, she was quickly promoted to Senior Manager for Asia and was relocated to Singapore. Her main focus was the cinema in Bishan, which was one of the busiest cinemas in the world!

She then came back once again to Australia, where she worked for United International Pictures as Marketing Manager and Senior Publicist. J successfully promoted and marketed movies such as Apollo 12, the Star Trek series, Babe, Twister and Casper, just to name a few.

After the birth of her third child, J wanted to start her own business. After nine months of research and negotiations, the first Boost Juice Bar was born in May 2000.

  • Janine’s tips

  • Janine Allis, a.k.a. Boost Founder and Director shares her tips on achieving work life balance!

    “Work/Life Balance”
is the new ‘in’ phrase, particularly for Gen Y.
The reality is that we all have a choice on what we want to achieve. My little theory is as follows (this is totally generalising and from my own personal experience):

15 -25 years old we are still figuring out what we want to do in life; partying and seeing friends is the higher priority.

25 - 30 years old starting to want to
make a mark for yourself in business and in life. Looking at settling in to life, maybe purchased a house, have a mortgage and starting to take
    life more seriously.

30 - 40 years old is the time when you are really making your mark. You are more confident, more mature and your peak to make a difference. There is little life balance during this period, it is working hard to make your mark, with your sleeves rolled up, head down and bum up, rarely coming up for air.

40 – phew, we got there! 40 is when you have done the hard yards and are now looking at directing the ship instead of being on the oars. This is when we work smarter not harder. Life balance can take on a reality.

50 years plus – you have sussed work life balance and it’s working for you. Many people will disagree with the above and for many people they can have their work / life balance from a young age. From my experience however, to be successful in everything you do, whether you are a business person or a sports person, you do have to give every atom of your being to your endeavour to be successful. There would be very few Olympic athletes that would say that they are achieving life balance coming up to the Olympics. Business is the same, if I did not work the 60-80 hours a week at Boost, I would not have been successful. So in essence, it is not that you cannot have life balance it is that life balance for me came in chunks.

Being now 43 years old, I do yoga 5 times
a week and now take tennis lessons. I spend
more time with my four children and I am very
good are directing the ship of business and
my calluses from being on the oars are just
about healed. Even at the peak of my working
life, below are some tips that have worked
    for me on my journey:

    1. Go to a health retreat once a year (tax deductible if you are a company or get your company to pay). We spend thousands of dollars every year on our car and very little on ourselves. These retreats are so good for the mind and the body. You will come back feeling totally refreshed.

    2. If you are unhappy change it, don’t complain about it: Success is about attitude Think positive and positive things happen.

    3. Recruit really exceptional people of character and integrity: To be successful you need to surround yourself personally and professionally with only the best people, with the best values.

    4. Drink a juice or smoothie everyday. – Ok.. this really is for me as well as you, particularly if it is a Boost ☺

Finally, I believe if with live on the SOAR mentality and not the VERB then we would all be successful in everything we do. If our communication, thoughts and how we are follow then life is great:

    S- Solutions
    O- Ownership
    A- Accountability
    R- Responsibility

    NOT a VERB
    V - Victim
    E - Entitled
    R - Rescue
    B - Blame.

    Love life!
