AcaiBrazil is famous for many things – the Amazon, the beaches of Copacabana, it’s many champion soccer teams, waxing, and… acai! We weren’t that concerned when people around the office said “it tastes like olives and chocolate – together”. We can assure you that acai is actually quite tasty – however its not the taste that makes this berry so great – it’s the amazing health benefits. We like to call it the Brazilian Wonder Berry. Oprah raves about it, and so do we!
#break#
Who knew…
The acai berry is only found in the rainforests of South America. The berry comes the from the acai palm, where it grows in strings. The palm itself is 15-25 meters tall with lots of trunks.Only 10% of the berry is edible! It is small, round, and dark purple in color. It kind of looks like a grape, but it’s smaller and darker. An acai palm is a late bloomer - it doesn't start producing fruit until it is about four or five years old.#break#
The juice of the acai berry is sometimes used in the preparation of patients for MRI scans of the gastrointestinal tract as a contrasting agent! Why it's good for you…The berries are an excellent source of essential fatty acids (Omega-3, 6 & 9), which are known for lowering low-density lipoprotein levels. The berry also contains phytosterols (bits of plant cell membranes), which help reduce blood plasma cholesterol. The berries also contain amino acids and vital trace elements which help your muscles, and they also provide dietary fibre.#break#
Acai berries are chock full of calcium, vitamins A and E, and phosphorus, as well as high concentrations of polyphenols, making them an excellent source of antioxidants. Even more so than blueberries, oranges, and even red wine!Acai berries may be a proverbial "Fountain of Youth." Comparing them to milk, the berries contain 3 times as many lipids, seven times as many carbohydrates, 118 times more iron, nine times as much Vitamin B1, and eight times as much Vitamin C. They also have the same amount of protein and calcium as milk!#break#

AppleThe apple – we've got to say that it started off to a rickety start with Adam & Eve giving it a nasty reputation as the forbidden fruit, however it regained some street cred when it helped Isacc Newton discover gravity by bopping him on the head. Since then, the apple gets along with pretty much every other fruit or veg.
Who knew…
Apples are actually members of the rose familyThey are 84% waterSmurfs are 3 apples high#break#
Apples are more efficient than caffeine in keeping people awake in the morningsThe custom of giving your teacher apples originated when public school teachers were paid with whatever the community could afford, often in food or goods.Irish folklore claims that if an apple is peeled into one continuous ribbon and thown behind a woman’s shoulder, it will land in the shape of the future husband’s initials.#break#
Why it's good for you…Apples contain vitamin C as well as a host of other antioxidant compounds. It also contains fibre to keep things moving downstairs. There’s been a tonne of research done, with some claims that apples may reduce the risk of colon, prostate and lung cancer. It has also been claimed that it can help with heart disease, weight loss and controlling cholesterol (as apples contain no cholesterol). No wonder they say an apple a day keeps the doctor away.

BananaWe go bananas over the old banana. At boost we love 'em. It’s that thing that just holds everything together so nicely. So you can imagine how devastated we were in 05 when most of Australia’s banana crop was wasted by Cyclone Larry. The lovely news is that bananas are back, and we love and appreciate them now more than ever!
#break#
Who knew…
Bananas don’t grow on trees – they’re actually massive plants, classified as a herbThere are more than 500 varieties of bananaIf monkeys eat too many un-ripe bananas their tongue and eyes will turn green.10 or more bananas growing together are known as a ‘hand’, and individually can be called ‘fingers’In 2001, there were more than 300 banana-related accidents in Britain, most involving people slipping on skins.#break#
In Eastern Africa you can buy banana beer, that is brewed from bananas. (We tried it in the test kitchen, however it never made it to Boost as the product development manager was too busy hugging the toilet seat)Why it's good for you…Banana contains three natural sugars – sucrose, fructose and glucose. Combined with our old (but certainly not constipated) friend fibre, a banana gives an instant, sustained and substantial boost of energy. Athletes love ‘em – apparently just two bananas provide enough energy for a strenuous 90 minute workout. #break#Not only that, they say it can help to overcome or prevent a substantial number of illnesses - here’s only a handful of them – depression, PMS, amenia, blood pressure, warts, constipation… say no to laxatives!
#break#
HangoversOne of the quickest ways of curing is to make a banana milkshake or, (to shamelessly plug our product) run/crawl into your nearest Boost store and grab a Banana Buzz Low Fat Smoothie! The banana helps calm the stomach, and with the help of the honey, builds up depleted blood sugar levels, while the milk soothes and re-hydrates your system.
Ok now we're going to steal Apple’s thunder…When you compare it to an apple, it has four times the protein, twice the carbohydrate, three times the phosphorus, five times the vitamin A and iron, and twice the other vitamins and minerals. #break#It is also rich in potassium and is one of the best value foods around (post cyclonic weather!). So maybe its time to change that well-known phrase so that we say, "A banana a day keeps the doctor away!"

StrawberryWe love our 'rawbs – there is a legend that strawberries were named In the nineteenth century by English children who picked the fruit, strung them on grass straws and sold them as "Straws of Berries". Alright then.

WheatgrassDon't be put off by the fact that wheatgrass tastes like freshly mown lawn clippings! Not to mention it’s lovely green colour…We swear by this stuff that it’s great for you in many ways!
Who knew...
It contains sixty times more vitamin C than oranges (weight for weight)It also contains eight times more iron than spinach! (weight for weight)Wheatgrass has over 100 vitamins, minerals, and nutrients#break#
It has all of the eight essential amino acids, plus eleven other amino acids, polypeptides (amino-acids chain thingos), and the bioflavonoids (compound bits related to vitamins) believed to neutralise toxic substances in the blood. Why is it good for you?Wheatgrass is mostly made out of stuff called chlorophyll – the chemical that is in most living plants that absorbs energy from sunlight (photosynthesis). It’s also the stuff that gives plant’s their green colour.
So due to the high level of chlorophyll, it’s claimed that wheatgrass increases the oxygen carrying capabilities of blood.#break#This brings with it other benefits, such as combating nasty toxins like carbon monoxide and other traffic pollutants, cigarette smoke and heavy metals.
So how does it get from the lawn into that little cup?First of all, it doesn’t come from a lawn! There are special wheatgrass farms that cultivate wheat seeds. When planted, they shoot off lovely long bits of grass. This is then delivered to our stores in a tray, where it continues to grow in a ‘wheatgrass canopy’. When the time is right, we simply cut it, wash it, then feed it through a special juicer that extracts the juice. Easy!
